Animal Addition

Equipment list

  • 4 foam dice

  • 1 set of number tiles

Explanation

To set up:
Spread the number tiles out in the centre of the learning area.
Place one foam dice in each of 4 corners - creating a rectangular shape around the tiles.
Divide the class into 4 teams. (Standing in a circle, have students number themselves off from 1-4).
Each team moves to their assigned dice station.
Each team decides on an animal for their team that they can make the sound of (for example, wolves, cows, frogs etc.)
Ask each team to demonstrate their animal sound.

To play:
A member of each team rolls their dice. All students on the team read the top number that is rolled and then move into the centre to find the corresponding number tile.
When a team member finds the correct tile, they hold it up and indicate to their team members that they have found it by making their animal sound.
All team members then return to their dice station and someone rolls the dice again. The second number that is rolled is added to the first number rolled and the whole team returns into the middle to find the number tile that represents the sum of the two previous rolls.
The process continues for as long as the teacher feels it is warranted. Perhaps all the way up to 100 or not, depending on the time you have.
Remember that ASK lessons are not competitive, so it is important to not set up the expectation of this activity being a race.

Variation/progression

  • Some like to switch operations half way through this activity and have the students practice subtraction. Start with the highest number rolled and work backwards.

  • For young learners, do not include the addition / subtraction and use this activity to support number sense and identification.
